Centralized versus Peer-to-peer Knowledge Management Systems

چکیده
The term knowledge management system (KMS) has been used widely to denote information and communication technologies in support of knowledge management. However, so far investigations about the notion of KMS, their functions and architecture as well as the differences to more traditional information systems remain on an abstract level. This paper reviews the literature on KMS and distills a number of characteristics concerning the specifics of knowledge to be managed, the platform metaphor, advanced knowledge services, KM instruments, supported processes and goals of their application. The paper then presents two ideal architectures for KMS, a centralized and a peer-topeer architecture, discusses their differences with the help of two example systems and suggests that each of these architectures fits a different type of KM initiative.

Personal Knowledge Management in a Peer-to-Peer Environment
Architectures of knowledge management systems (KMS) have typically been centralized client/server solutions. Shortcomings of centralized KMS include costs, restricted focus, and lack of integration of personal workspaces. The focus of centralized KMS is typically restricted by organizational boundaries, because of organizationspecific ontologies and insufficient integration of heterogeneous inf...
متن کاملPAIKM-2005 - Peer-to-Peer and Agent Infrastructures for Knowledge Management
Today’s IT infrastructures for knowledge management often build on centralized information systems architectures, e.g., Web servers. Such systems have shown their benefits in many situations where knowledge processes are comparatively rigid and where the value of knowledge to be contributed to such a centralized repository can be easily assessed. Unfortunately, knowledge-intensive work frequent...
متن کاملPeer-to-Peer Issue Tracking System: Challenges and Solutions
Issue tracking tools such as Jira or Bugzilla have become important for software development, especially with distributed development teams becoming the norm in several organizations. It is interesting to see that some open source software come with their own issue tracking systems, such as Eclipse bugzilla (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/). However, these tools are centralized and are project s...
متن کاملA Genetic Programming-based trust model for P2P Networks
Abstract— Peer-to-Peer ( P2P ) systems have been the center of attention in recent years due to their advantage . Since each node in such networks can act both as a service provider and as a client , they are subject to different attacks . Therefore it is vital to manage confidence for these vulnerable environments in order to eliminate unsafe peers . This paper investigates the use of genetic ...
متن کاملA Four-Layer Model for IT Support of Knowledge Management
Strategies for knowledge management as well as strategies for ITsystems supporting knowledge management have often been conceived to serve one particular knowledge management paradigm. We argue that in practice there is not one paradigm that suits all needs of all organizations. Considering knowledge management as a measure to further communication in an organization we find that different ways...
